Amazon Opera House (Teatro Amazonas)

The Amazon Opera House (Teatro Amazonas) is the most important historic building in Manaus, not only for the architectural value, but mainly for historical significance. It has gone through several renovations and is now considered the city’s postcard, known worldwide for its inspiring architecture.

Palace of Justice (Palácio da Justiça)

The Palace of Justice was established in 1900, it was built on an elevated area, and protected by a thick wall with railings on Eduardo Ribeiro avenue, the main road of the downtown area.

Rio Negro Palace (Palácio Rio Negro )

The Palácio Rio Negro (Rio Negro Palace Cultural Center), historic and cultural area of Manaus, was built in the early twentieth century in an eclectic style, to be the private residence of rubber merchant, German Waldemar Scholz. In 1917, it was acquired by the government to become the seat of the executive branch and the governor’s residence, palace as permanent orders until April 1995.

Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

São Sebastião Church (Igreja São Sebastião)

The São Sebastião Church is near to Teatro Amazonas (Amazon Opera House) and is a picturesque spot that catches the eye for interior decoration. The church dates from 1888 and has a large variety of styles. It’s a nice place to know, especially for religious people.

Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday 2:00 pm to 6:00pm.

Provincial mansion (Palacete Provincial)

The provincial mansion in Manaus, former Military Police Command, was reopened on March 25th, 2009. The palace is part of the architectural ensemble of Heliodorus Balbi square in the city center. When visting the mansion, it will be possible to visit the State Art Gallery, the Museum of Image and Sound, Tiradentes Museum, the Museum of Archaeology and also the Numismatic Museum, with a large collection of coins. Admission is free, as well as guided tours.

Hours: Tuesday to Thursday, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm; Fridays, 9:00 am to 8:00 pm; Saturdays, 9:00 am to 8:00 pm and Sundays 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Ponta Negra Beach (Praia da Ponta Negra)

The Ponta Negra Beach is located at 13 km from the downtown area and is one of the main sights of the capital of Amazonas. At any time of the year you can visit the beach to enjoy its beautiful scenery, watching the bridge of Rio Negro, enjoying the shows that happen there or walk the outdoors. It is also next to the Tropical Hotel.

CIGS Zoo (Zoológico do CIGS)

The Cigs zoo, is maintained by the Army. It currently has in its collection only Brazilian Amazonian animals, among them there are tortoises, alligators, parrots, snakes, jaguars, and monkeys, which are held in a very beautiful and spacious area. There is a tour for those who want to know the region and some animals that are endangered according to IBAMA.

Science Forest (Bosque da Ciência)

The INPA Science Forest is the 3rd best zoo in Brazil and the 7th in South America. It has an area of approximately thirteen (13) acres, located within the city limits of Manaus in the central-east area. Its main attractions are: Educational Trails, Manatee tanks, Giant Otters Nursery, Home Science, Tanimbuca Island, Madeira House, Hug of Death, Suspension Track, Amazon Lake, Hotbed of Alligators, Corner of Inajás, and Orchid bromeliad.

Hours: Tuesday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm/ 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Cultural Center of Amazon’s Peoples (Centro Cultural dos Povos da Amazônia)

The Cultural Center of Amazon’s Peoples mission is: using and disseminating culture and knowledge of the Amazonian Peoples, to serve as reference both regionally and internationally, to contribute to the formation of the Amazonian cultural memory. Inside, the museum’s Cultural Center, there are numerous photos, tables, fruits and necklaces used by indigenous peoples.

Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico)

Visiting the Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden of Manaus, you can experience all the exuberance of the Amazon forest land. Its more than 3km of trails take visitors inside the primary forest where you can find 40-foot and 400 year old trees. Plus you can see butterflies and other insects, monkeys and sloths. With luck, there’s a chance of an encounter with rare wildlife such as the harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja), which measures up to two meters from one wing to another and is considered the most powerful bird of prey in the world.

Mindú Municipal Park (Parque Municipal do Mindú)

The Mindú Municipal Park  was established in 1993 through the Municipal Law n. 219 of November 11, with an area of 309 518 m² square, currently protects an area of 40.8 ha.

Among the various environmental attractions, such as copies of local flora and fauna observed during the trails, the park also has an amphitheater for 700 people, an auditorium with capacity for 100 people, orchid, suspended track with signage, trails and restrooms with adaptations for people with special needs, environmental library, beds of herbs with medicinal and aromatic properties, cafeteria and parking lot and straw houses.

Presidente Figueiredo City

Known as the Land of the Waterfalls cataloged, it has over 100 waterfalls of various sizes and shapes, and various rapids, caves and caverns, which enable the practice of adventure sports such as rafting, float cross, kayaking, zip lining, rappelling, caving , tree climbing and jungle trails. Here, you will not find the typical idyllic setting with pools of blue water surrounded by colorful flowers, but a single environment whose beauty and charm comes from its naturally wild look and feeling of isolation it imposes.

There are several regional restaurants around the city and a very good range of guesthouses and small hotels which, although simple, are organized and comfortable. Unlike typical jungle lodges in the region, the prices are fair and fit the budget of any tourist.

Amazon Bus - Meet 40 attractions in Manaus in 3 hours

For those who want to experience the major attractions of the city of Manaus, they can use the Amazon Bus. Amazon Bus visits 40 spots in the city of Manaus, and lasts around three hours. Among the sights that bus passes are the Amazonas Theater; Instruction Center for Jungle Warfare (CIGS); the National Environmental Research Institute (INPA); The Billiards Park, a tourist complex which includes restaurants, bars, places for concerts and other services; the Indian Museum and the Ponta Negra Beach.

The bus runs from Monday to Saturday at 09:00 am, and at 2:30 pm, departing from the Tourist Service Center, next to the Amazonas Theater. The ride on the bus costs R$ 60,00 (about $20,00) per person. The value can undergo adjustments throughout the year.

River tours:

The Meeting of  the Waters (Encontro das Águas)

The Meeting of Waters is a phenomenon that happens in the Amazon after the confluence of the Amazon River, muddy water, with the Rio Solimões, black water. During a stretch of six kilometers (22km arriving at certain times), the two rivers are side by side without mixing their waters, due to the different densities and speeds. It is very interesting to observe, take pictures and there is also storytelling.

Knowing the Amazon Pink Dolphin and Anavilhanas: Novo Airão City

This attraction is located in Novo Airão which is located at 180 km from Manaus, to reach the city you cross the Rio Negro bridge. The most famous attraction of the city is to be able to interact with the pink dolphins that regularly visit the floating house “Dona Marilda”, many tourists visit Novo Airão to feed and watch this animal that is one of the most emblematic animals of the Amazon fauna.

The city of Novo Airão is known for hosting the famous Anavilhanas National Park, a federal protected area that encompasses more than 400 islands with white sand beaches, lakes, streams and tributaries. Occupying an area of 37,771,246 square kilometers, it is the source of the Rio Negro, and has one of the most important ecosystems of the Amazon.

How to get to:

  • By car or bus, crossing the Rio Negro Bridge. On the other side of the  Negro River, you must follow the AM-070 (Manoel Urbano Road) Highway until Km 80, turn right and follow the AM-352 highway that leads to Novo Airão.

Jungle Lodge – Ariaú Amazon Towers

The Jungle Lodge Ariaú Amazon Towers, located in the municipality of Iranduba, State of Amazonas, is unique in its architectural design, because it is built on wooden stilts at treetop height. Due to its unique structure, the hotel integrates together with you and with all the existing wildlife in the Amazon Jungle along with several species of monkeys, macaws, parrots, pink dolphins, among other animals of our fauna.
